I love traditions. I also resist traditions which begat high expectations in others and internal pressure in myself.

But lately, we’ve been having fun with special days without any intention of making them traditions.

Today is Leif Erikson day.

We read Leif the Lucky (aff), the classic book by Ingri and Edgar D’Aulaire. (Beautiful Feet Books sells all of the D’Aulaire books, including several of the hard to find ones. The older boys loved what they called the Hilarious Book of Greek Myths.)

The kids made cord with a lucet as I read aloud. A8 made his stretch across the room. This evening we found the movie The Viking — it’s a silent film from1928 but in full color!

Though I was familiar with Leif Erikson and the Vikings, it’s only been in the last year or so that I’ve learned more. Perk of homeschooling? I discover delightful details that I never knew about the creation and history and its Author.
